CENTENARY OF TOOWONG
The celebrations this August [18-24] will be to commemorate 100
years since the Town of Toowong was proclaimed.
Judy Magub who is researching the history of local Government
in the area, for the book "TOOWONG", being published by the local
"Toowong History Group", said prior to Toowong becoming a town it
was placed under the Indooroopilly Divisional Board.
In May 1880 it was proclaimed a shire under the Local Authorities
Act. The appointed members of the shire Council have streets in
the area named after them - Miskin, Kaye, Markwell, Todd, Cribb
and Payne, Gregory, Shaw, Jones, Richer and Sleath (to name a few).
The first Mayor of the new town in 1903 was Sir Augustus Charles
Gregory and the town included parts of present day Auchenflower,
Milton, Rainworth & Taringa.
In 1925 the Town of Toowong was absorbed into the City of Brisbane.
In 1881 there was 300 dwellings in Toowong and a population of 1275.
By 1922 there were 2400 dwellings and 10,000 people.
Although we are celebrating 100 years since the Town of Toowong
was proclaimed it is a splendid opportunity to celebrate all our
history right back to the aboriginal people who originally inhabited
the area. Our book, "Toowong - A community's history" will be launched
at 10am on Thursday August 7, 2003.
