IS YOUR QUEENSLANDER IN ITS BEST STATE
OF ORIGIN?
If you live
in, own or are renovating a Queeensland timber house, you can discover
how and why they developed their peculiar features with a new book
by renovating expert, building historian, author and columnist Ian
Evans.
Ian reveals
some fascinating facts on the Queensland timber houses of the late
19th and early 20th century and how they came to have their broad,
shaded verandahs, curved roofing iron, tall stumps, lattice and
ornate sheetmetal roof ventilators in his new book The Queensland
House - History and Conservation which he has published under
his company Flannel Flower Press at Mullumbimby.
Some unusual
contributors who influenced the look of the Queensland houses, says
Ian, were a reform group of the Anglican Church, sugar cane planters
from the West Indies, a Brisbane jam factory and German missionaries
. This comprehensive and informative text is a boon for anyone seeking
to renovate or restore their Queensland timber home with authenticity
and for owners and people interested in how and why the houses'
features developed and changed over the years. Sketches and illustrations
are a comprehensive guide for builders, designers and architects
and support a good read for those merely interested in the social
development of dwellings in Queensland over the past 120 years.
Ian has produced
the book in conjunction with The National Trust and included a definitive
guide to caring a for and conserving old timber houses by conservation
architect Jinx Miles.
