John Bray receiving card number 1 at the opening of the Toowong Library in 1961

"The Toowong Library at 585 Coronation Drive opened for membership in April 1961 and was a controversial local talking point . The futuristic design by city architect James Birell has proved a timeless classic which happily has survived as part of a proposed development. Can you identify any of the school students in the picture first to join the new library?" If so, please email us with their names. Email West Toowong

"I cannot help with the names of the students pictures, but I was on the staff of the Library at the time, and I recall that the roof had a round yellow-coloured skylight. The sun shone down through this and onto the counter area which was in the centre of the Library. The yellowish light made several of the staff physically ill, and it had to be altered! The building was known as the fried egg, because of this yellow centre." Margaret Greer 2006
