HISTORY UNDER THREAT

WE INVITE YOU TO ASSIST US IN COLLECTING REMINISCENCES ABOUT... THE HISTORY OF TOOWONG AND HER PEOPLE

Those folk who either live here or who have links with the suburb in some way.

We are interested in collecting people's stories about the Toowong area and the people associated with her in any way- whether these people lived here, visited Toowong and its people, worked here or who came for other reasons e.g. for employment ,recreational purposes, such as attending church, playing sport or as a member of local community organisations.

Because Taringa at the moment does not have a historical group,we are also accepting contributions about Taringa.

We hope to use these stories in the future to assist with research for future publications on the various aspects on the history of Toowong and we hope that exerts will be published to supplement these publications.

We are collecting contributions on the following;
Stories and memories of your steet and neighbourhood Childhood memories and a brief family history (if relevent to Toowong)
Stories of school, war and Depression Aspects of family history if relevent to Toowong
Stories of well-known identities and prominent citizens
The history of ethnic communities in Toowong
Reminiscences about places and events history of your house and street
And other aspects that you think are of interest
Stories about the Shopkeepers ans the shops of Toowong
Family life and household routine and the way your family did things
Leisure activities and how holidays were spent

History is about recording Changes. We are interested in recording how change impacts upon people's lives. How has change affected your life compared to that of your parents and grandparents.

Here are some areas we have identified taht may be relevent:
Medical advances and how these have affected upon your life
Changes in technology and how these have affected lifestyle
Changes in generational attitude and value systems
Social change
Life in transport and communications
Changes in how you spent your leisure time

Copying of Records
If you are willing to lend us photos these are scanned and returned to you immediately.

Documents, community histories and diaries are being photostated for our files.

We are compiling lists of memorabillia and artifacts for display in the future.

You can help by:

Contacting us to record your stories and reminiscences
Alternatively, writing out your reminiscences and sending them to us or dictating them over the phone.
Volunteering to tape oral interviews
Assisting us by transcribing the oral history tapes or typing

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Through the gathering of a range of local oral histories, this project aims to:
1. Identify the character and history of Toowong.
2. Map the relationships between people and place.
3. Build stronger social ties across the communityÕs various and changing demographics.
4. Acknowledge the contribution to the community of a wide range of individuals.
5. Raise awareness and broaden the understanding of Toowong's social, historical and town planning patterns in both the local community and the wider Brisbane community to enable more successful, useful and appropriate outcomes from future decisions affecting the suburb.
