In Loving Memory Of The Hon Sir Robert Philp Photo

Photo of Sir Robert Philp

Sir Robert Philp

This is the grave of my great-grandfather, Sir Robert Philp, in Toowong Cemetery. Robert Philp (1851-1922) was twice Premier of Queensland, including during Federation (1901). He lived at 'Mallow' in Kensington Terrace, Toowong - now the site of the Brisbane Boys' College boarding houses and dining room complex.

His wife, Jessie Bannister Philp (nee Campbell), is also buried here. She died of scarlet fever in 1890, at the age of 34, leaving 7 children - the youngest just two weeks old.

Robert and Jessie's eldest daughter, Isabella Mary (May) Philp, and an infant grandchild, Jessie Ruth Henderson, are also interred on this site. Miss May Philp bequeathed 'Mallow' to BBC when she died in 1962. Sadly, it was burnt down eight or nine years later. Prue Firth

Mum says Auntie Ivy (Philp) told her how she and a friend used to ride their ponies in (from Toowong/Taringa) to Girls' Grammar. Ivy was always jumping off to rescue their hairclips when their hair came loose! Prue Firth

According to Mr Arthur Palmer, a boarder at BBC during the 1960's, Mallow was known to the students as Philp House. Mr Palmer boarded in Philp House during 1965 and 1966.

I am a Philp by marriage. My father-in-law who is well into his nineties is Norman Alexander Campbell Philp. His father's name was Norman Wylie Philp. N.A.C. Philp has a sheep station called "Stanley Downs" between Longreach and Hughenden. Norman Wylie also had a property in that area. Norman Wylie Philp retired to Clayfield. Norman Wylie passed over in the sixties I believe. Regards Jenifer Philp.
