Volunteer Firemen - Toowong

CAN YOU HELP IDENTIFY THESE MEN? (and dog) YES

Group photograph of volunteer Toowong firemen (date unknown)

Photograph supplied by Mrs. Edna Gibson (nee Rice) her dad, William Charles Rice, was a member and is on the end right middle row

Charles Petersen is third from left in the middle row. Edna remembers the fire bell ringing in the middle of the night and her dad going off to fight a fire. Her dad, William Rice, was born in 1882 and married in 1909. Her mother was Margaret Ann Doherty of Sherwood Rd., Toowong.

Janet Woodall found this in a news paper article c. 1932 - reporting a  golden wedding anniversary for a marriage: January 31st 1882 - extract  "in the days of shire councils, Mr. Watts was for almost seven years an Alderman of the Toowong Council, and Mayor of Toowong in 1919. He was chairman of the Toowong Fire Brigade, and during his office the fire station was built and a motor engine procured.
