Wridgeway House, 23 Curlew Street, Toowong

Significant historical house and garden - Wridgeway

"Wridgeway", the grand house at 23 Curlew Street, is under threat! In its present setting of a large, established garden surrounded by trees, it is a landmark in Toowong. There is currently an application by a developer (see 6 Soudan Street for same developer) to build townhouses at the back of this historical home.

"Wridgeway" played a key role for early traffic between Ipswich and Brisbane, (locals believe it was the Cobb and Co. stop) and is in excellent condition. Many of the trees on the site date from early last century, and, with the rest of the garden, should therefore be considered intrinsic to the houseÕs character.

We believe it would be most unfortunate for this piece of Brisbane's heritage to be diminished.

Curlew Street presently retains an excellent character streetscape (and, from Moggill Road, a significant consistent back-of houses/back-yard scape). Filling this 'back' view with housing (and particularly the unsympathetic 'blank wall' housing proposed) will be detrimental to the heritage value of the house (and indeed, the entire street). Further, removal of the significant trees and garden will also diminish the 'front' streetscape.
